Going into the holiday, my main hope was this would be a chance to recharge for the new year by spending 8 days in Summer time Australia. When my good pal and fitness connoisseur Kyle Sisson decided to join me, it was on. Australia strike mission vacation 2019. Kyle didn’t grow up competitive surfing and obsessing over Australian surf towns his whole life like I did, but he definitely was not apposed to the shred tuneup a trip to the Gold Coast, Australia can give to any level of surfer. We were both on the same page that this would be a trip of athletics, a time to to brush up on some work, and just an overall Aussie break that would send us back to the states excited for 2019.

To make up the perfect Aussie getaway, we wanted to spend one of the 8 days in Noosa Heads on the Sunshine Coast to the north, a charming “Aussies getaway spot” and legendary surf town. Then we were off for a three hour drive south to the southern tip of Quensland/Northern New South Wales to spend the majority of our trip at the world class surf towns of Coolangatta, Byron Bay and the entire Northern Rivers surf hub.

We flew by way of Virgin Australia. The flight took 14 hours direct to Brisbane. We immediately lost two days because of the time difference and ended up getting to the “Kluger” rental car in Australia by 7 AM, March 2nd. Exhausted and famished, I was still hyper focused studying my new Australian landscape like a hawk. The whole place looked like King Kong, Skull Island! Off the freeway heading north, there was crazy inverted mountains and spooky floating swamp trees abound. Since we were on the northern end of Australia and getting closer to the equator, it was also intensely lush green and tropical.

After two hours of driving (with a few funny video recordings of me driving on the opposite side of the road) later, we arrived in the charming little town of Noosa Heads. We weren’t suppose to check in to the Air BnB until two so we started by going down to the famous Hastings Street boardwalk and ventured to get a bite to eat/check the whole place out.

Our first impression of the boardwalk was astonishing. Del Mar, CA vibes certainly came to mind when seeing this bustling little beach nook. The whole place was charming, as surf oriented as you’d expect an Australian mecca to be, and had good food and a beautiful landscape to boot. Noosa checked off all lot of boxes! We could already see the reason it is considered one of Australia’s best all around beach towns.

After eating a giant lunch at one of the nice cafes on the beach, Kyle and I hit the water for a swim and were just taken aback by how electric blue the water was. The sand was tidy and white as could be. This was one of the first times in a while where I was swimming around and just did not want to get out of the water because of how pleasant it was. The whole place was the perfect settup and our Air BnB was epic to match. We were not missing the recent LA rain at all and this was truly an incredible intro to our trip in the Land Down Under.

After a couple hours of brushing the plane grogginess off, we decided to go for an afternoon surf. Noosa is a legendary longboarding heritage spot with an incredible history. The surf break is just up from the town strip where all the swimmers go, and the beach starts unraveling into a series of coves that proceed further and further out onto the lush green Noosa National Park headland.

The interesting part of these multiple surf breaks is there are no real roads to really drive there on. If you want to surf anything other than the first point within the town, you have to walk or jog along the beautiful walk path onwards and upwards. This makes it naturally a bit tougher to get to the spots deeper up the point like Granites and TeaTrees, but we still found them to be packed with surfers!

The takeaway of our first day in Australia experience was, Noosa, with it’s sneaky little spots and dreamy, long waves, is one of the coolest places I have ever come across. We got a top notch dinner that night, and then we were onward south to the Gold Coast and the famous Superbank in the morning.

Noosa was a 10 out of 10
